The 2022 OSTP Nelson Memo set out an ambitious vision for public access to federally funded research: from January 2026, all new grantees will be expected to comply with funder-specific public access mandates for research outputs, including underlying data.
Many larger funding agencies already have plans in place, but the additional stipulations made in the Nelson Memo raise a number of questions. What will the burdens be on researchers and their institutions? How can publishers help researchers fulfil their obligations? And, most crucially of all, how will the required changes in infrastructure be funded?
This panel session aims to unite stakeholders from across the spectrum of research communication to examine these questions (and more), and set out next steps to achieve full public access to federally funded research.
